The Midnight Clear

In the same region,
shepherds were staying out in the fields
and keeping watch at night over their flock.

Luke 2:8, 10 HCSB

The angels came to sing the ‘glorious song above’
but the exuberance of Heaven was bigger than the sky
and “the glory of the Lord shone around them”,
         so bright and stunning that
        the simple, quiet shepherds
                were absolutely terrified!

But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look,
I bring you good news of great joy
that will be for all the people:
today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord
was born for you. . .”

To shepherds - first and only - came the news.
Not to High Priests, not the rich, the great,
           nor even to carpenters.
            Only to shepherds.
                 Why?

        To shepherds, of course!
        The perfect announcers . . .

                because a Lamb was born!

To a stable they quickly went,
the place where ewes are taken to bear their young.
        A humble place, yes.
The Baby’s bed, a manger of straw.
But why a stable for the Messiah King?

    To a stable, of course!
    Perfect home. . .

because The Lamb of God was born . . .

The shepherds were in the fields all night because according to
Ryrie’s Study Bible, “animals used for sacrifices were kept in the fields all year.”

In his book The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, Alfred Edersheim explains that these particular shepherds were distinct from all others in Israel; and their flocks, which they tended so closely at night, were also very special. For you see, these shepherds were a part of the priesthood, and these sheep were specifically set aside to be sacrificial lambs in the Temple services. The shepherds had the responsibility to make sure that a lamb without spot or blemish be preserved from harm, until it could be brought forth for sacrifice. It was only fitting therefore that the angels would make the news known to them, just when they were minding their own business. And listen carefully to the words the Angel spoke. "Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." In other words, the Spotless Lamb has come. "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the World!" said John, as he saw Jesus walking by the Jordan some years later. Seeing these priest shepherds were about to be put out of business once the ultimate Lamb was sacrificed, it was only fitting that they were given notice well in advance! Rylisms e-Sword

A lamb ... born innocent and clean. A perfect-adequate Meal for others... if eaten. What a better symbol of Him than a lamb? "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world", said His prophet...

Dear Tana, You can't know how thrilled I was to read that the shepherds were priests! To know this makes everything about the story even more amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to send this. I am now reading Edersheim. Thank you for MY Christmas gift.
