The Four Faces of Jesus
The Four Faces of Jesus
Author: Martha Kilpatrick

The Lord Jesus has many names but He has four faces, symbols of His being. Four fascinating pictures of His endless wealth. Each one is a challenge to our measly idea of this unspeakably rich Son of God. Four sides, four manifestations of Jesus' character. Glimpses only, of His glittering facets. Few are those who can distinguish the four faces of Jesus. See His contrasting sides and know Him as He is . . . .

Knowing Christ as Lion is
to live in the safety of fearing God.

David watched the might of his Divine Lion
conquer, through David's hands,
the untamable, uncatchable lion.
Devourer of sheep.

And David strutted and conquered by the
knowledge of such a Lion-God.

When we know the Face of the Lion,
we can be fierce lions.

The Enemy of the Beloved is always posing in
the imitation of Him who is the True.
Satan "prowls as a roaring lion"
but it is a fangless show.
A noisy nothing.
Only our cringing gives him his teeth.

The True Lion is the one to fear.

We don't believe in a Lord who roars at sin
and rages at evil.
Why? because we don't want that God
to thunder at us!
So we think that to ignore the blast of
life into the face of our insipid living
is to create a Calm Sovereign.
The Lion is not passive.

This is our Lovely Lord Jesus speaking:

You serpents, you brood of vipers,
how will you escape the sentence of hell?

Matt. 23:33 NAS
"Then He will also say to those on His left,
'Depart form Me, accursed ones, into
the fire which has been prepared for
the devil and his angels;
for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat;
I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink . . .'"

Matt. 26:25, 41 NAS

Matthew knew the Lion and recorded His growl
and we, like those Pharisees,
who heard not the roar as being Very God,
we dare to name the blast of confrontation:
"injustice," "misunderstanding,"
"Satanic," "martyrdom."

Above all, despite all, we meet the Lion!
The prophets of old roared with the very
blast of a Holy God.
Killed for it . . . yes.
Lowered in a miry well.
But the roar of the Great Lion
was heard on the earth and
a few fell to the ground in wise fear.

Yes, the Lion roars to every believer.
But to hear Him as the Lion is rare.
To recognize that Regal Face behind the throes
of life's pressuring crunch is
to be introduced to Christ as Reigning Lion and
Ultimate King
over all people and all events for the
child of God.

We resent the harshness of a Lord who simply
shouts to save us from the impending train,
who pulls us from the tracks with violence.
Fools we are! How we need the Lion!

The Lion who knows the future of His absolute reign
and the righteous stance of the Holy Father
warns through our experiences,
ferocious for our safety.

The Lion assaults sin but He also growls as
a Jealous Lover,
hating the paltry idols to
which we fasten our souls.
And through life's painful aggression,
He is ripping down the altars
of our disloyalty.

Ah, then the Lion roars against the enemies who
would lie, steal and murder our destiny!

He roars against us but
He also roars for us.
Know and then love Him as He is . . .

the Majestic Lion of Judah.
