The Four Faces of Jesus
The Four Faces of Jesus
Author: Martha Kilpatrick

The Lord Jesus has many names but He has four faces, symbols of His being. Four fascinating pictures of His endless wealth. Each one is a challenge to our measly idea of this unspeakably rich Son of God. Four sides, four manifestations of Jesus' character. Glimpses only, of His glittering facets. Few are those who can distinguish the four faces of Jesus. See His contrasting sides and know Him as He is . . . .

Philippians 2:5-7 Amplified Bible

Let this same attitude and purpose and (humble) mind
be in you which was in Christ Jesus;
Let Him be your example in humility:

Who, although being essentially one with God
and in the form of God (possessing the fullness
of the attributes which make God God),
did not think this equality with God was a thing to be
eagerly grasped or retained,

But stripped Himself (of all privileges and rightful dignity),
so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave),
in that He became like men and
         was born a human being.

Jesus - His glory is that He was Divine, yes.
But that He was human in His Divinity, that is
beyond Reality.
Outside our comprehension!

The Human Face of Jesus,
perhaps the most shocking face of all.
That He was divine we can somewhat grasp.
That He was fully human, we barely perceive.

Jesus called Himself "Son of Man."
His favorite title. He tied Himself to our lowness.

His ancestry, so carefully noted in the Bible,
included the fallen, the wretched, the shameful.
All human possibilities lay festered in His being.
Every human dilemma was deposited in His bones.
His struggles against that earth-tied inheritance,
we hardly know.
His faith and surrender - His amazing transcendence
are the God-fruit we see.

Can it be that He lived as I?
and fought my clay made fight?

Could He know my soul and yours in
views from inside - no longer distant and unmoved?

Could His compassion now be for my
human plight? my self-made prison?

Did He experience my stress and pull?
Suffer frailty and wrenching need . . .
tempted by strength, same as me?

His human face is my hope and understanding.
He conquered what I cannot,
succeeded where I failed
and lived a normal Life inhuman,
a Life Transcendent where defeat and rebellion
are not known and
holy strength is endurance, not dominance.

The unimaginable humility of being human after
having Reigned In Glory.
To be nothing, after having Ageless Position.
To be nobody, from being the Great and Central One.
To be powerless, after possessing Universal Power.

Such unfathomable love to confine Himself
inside the prison of our fallenness,
enter the arena of our predicament and
fight our fight to live for God!

His conquering of humanity, His absolute
loyalty to God, then gave us - as a free gift -
the liberty from our own humanity
we could have no other way.

The Beloved Son of God was given
to be our Heroic Brother . . .
a companion of understanding and the
conquering victor of our fatal humanity!

Philippians 2:8-10 Amplified Bible
And after He had appeared in human form,
He abased and humbled Himself (still further)
and carried His obedience to the extreme of death,
even the death of the cross!

Therefore (because He stooped so low)
God has highly exalted Him and
has freely bestowed on Him the name
that is above every name.

That in (at) the name of Jesus every knee should
(must) bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth.
